Insurance Guide for Ole Miss Students & Parents: Cars, Dorms & Apartments

Every August, thousands of students move to Oxford for school at the University of Mississippi. Between cars, dorm rooms, off-campus apartments, and game-day weekends, there are a few insurance questions every family should sort out before move-in day.

1. Insuring Your Student's Car in Oxford

In most cases, keeping your student on the family auto policy is less expensive than a separate policy. But there are a few things to get right:

  • Update the garaging address. If the car will live in Oxford during the school year, tell your insurer. Rates are based partly on where a vehicle is kept, and the wrong address can create problems at claim time.
  • Ask about a good student discount. Many carriers offer discounts for full-time students who maintain a B average (often a 3.0 GPA) or better.
  • Leaving the car at home? If your student is away at school without a car, many carriers offer a "student away at school" discount, often when the school is a certain distance from home.
  • Review liability limits. Young drivers are statistically more likely to be in accidents. Higher liability limits and an umbrella policy can protect your family's assets.

2. Does Your Homeowners Policy Cover Their Dorm Room?

Often partially. Many homeowners policies extend personal property coverage to a dependent student living in on-campus housing, but that coverage is frequently limited to a percentage of your contents coverage (commonly around 10%), and your homeowners deductible applies.

⚠️ Check Before You Assume

Policies vary. Some limit coverage to on-campus housing only, some cap specific items like electronics, and some require the student to be under a certain age or enrolled full-time. A quick policy review can save a surprise later.

3. Off-Campus Apartments Usually Need Renters Insurance

Once your student moves into an off-campus apartment or rental house, your homeowners policy may no longer extend to their belongings. And the landlord's insurance covers the building, not your student's stuff.

Renters insurance is one of the most affordable policies available, and it typically covers:

  • Personal property: laptops, phones, TVs, furniture, clothes, and bikes, from theft, fire, smoke, and certain water damage, even when stolen away from the apartment.
  • Personal liability: if your student accidentally causes damage, like a kitchen fire that spreads to a neighboring unit, or a guest is injured.
  • Additional living expenses: if the apartment becomes unlivable after a covered loss.

Many Oxford apartment complexes require proof of renters insurance on the lease anyway.

4. Roommates, Game Days & Theft

  • Roommates: Each roommate generally needs their own renters policy. One person's policy typically doesn't cover a roommate's belongings.
  • Game-day weekends: Busy weekends bring crowds and visitors. Renters or homeowners coverage can help if belongings are stolen from a car, the apartment, or a tailgate, subject to your deductible.
  • High-value items: Expensive jewelry, cameras, or musical instruments may need to be scheduled separately for full protection.

5. Buying a Condo or House for Your Student?

Some Oxford families buy a condo or house for their student to live in during school. That property needs its own policy, and the right type depends on who lives there and whether roommates pay rent. A condo policy, homeowners policy, or landlord (dwelling fire) policy may apply. Let us help you set it up correctly from day one.
